A BRITISH UNIVERSITY OF THE FAR EAST.

The Memorandum raises a new issue

which appears also in the prunced-

ings of an ADVISORY COMMITTED A HONG KONG UNIVERSITY AND

}

THE HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIOP IN MALAYA AND HONG KONG

which sat with Mr. G.E.J.Gent as Chairman in 1943, The

Advisory Committee suggested for consideration, as an alternative to a University in Hong Kong for the Colony and China, a more ambitious Britich University of the Far Fast to serve the needs of Mulaya and Hong Kong. On the matter

~ location of such a University the Committee was divided. On the general isano its recommendation was that "this mattor, which will largely depend on the policy of His Kajesty's Government in these territories should be reserved for the consideration of a Commission of Enquiry which might bo appointed in the United Kingiom to visit Hong Kong and Malaya and to advise upon the full development of the

higher educational system there in the light of the post-vur situation"

THE PRESENT COMMITTEE.

Shortly before the collapse of Jupan another

Committee was appointed mainly to consider what could be done to forward the "short-term" policy of opening the University as soon as possible to train mon and women needed for the public services, Medicine, Surgery and toaching especially, That Committce ztzf had not sat whon members of the University Staff returned from the internment in Hong Kong. The Colonial Office therefore decided to add

to the Membership of the Committee and to widen the terms of

reference to include consideration of both short-term and

long-term policies. In this manner the present Committee came

into being.
